The Admiral Marketing team are heading off on all kinds of holidays this summer!

From sunny staycations to once-in-a-lifetime trips across the globe, each trip is different – and so is the travel insurance they need.

Travel insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all

Every trip needs the right insurance. What you’ll need depends on where you’re going and what you’ll be doing.

Here are some things to think about:

  • Where you’re going – UK, Europe, or worldwide
  • What activities you have planned – for example, water sports, hiking, cycling
  • The type of trip you’re taking – for example, cruise, road trip, honeymoon

You’ll also need to think about things like:

  • any medical conditions you have – you’ll need to tell your insurer when you get a quote to be fully covered
  • whether you need Gadget cover for any of your personal belongings
  • any other extras you might need, like Enhanced Trip Disruption cover – this is an optional add-on to cover those out-of-pocket expenses that come with being delayed

Once you know your travel plans, make sure you check your policy book as policy limits and exclusions apply.

Need inspiration for your next break, or want to check what cover fits your plans? Take a look at our team’s trips below and the insurance that keeps them covered.

Trip 1 – Seville to Marbella

What’s the plan?

Our Brand community manager, Katy, is heading to Marbella with the family while her husband cycles from Seville for charity.

What travel cover do they need?

Katy and her family will need travel insurance for Europe – a Global Health Insurance Card isn’t enough.

What to watch out for

As her husband is going to be cycling, they’ll need to check the limit on medical expenses in case he has an accident and injures himself. It's worth checking if there's cover for charity events, his bike and kit in case something happens to them too.

Trip 2 – a California road trip

What’s the plan?

Our Marketing graduate, Becca, is hitting the West Coast for a once-in-a-lifetime road trip.

She’ll be doing lots of outdoor activities, plus long-distance driving with multiple stops across different cities.

“We’re going to be doing lots of hiking, different water sports like paddleboarding, and going on excursions to places like Alcatraz Island. Hopefully we’ll get to watch a baseball match too.”

What travel cover do they need?

Becca will need travel insurance for the USA. She’ll need to make sure her policy includes high medical cover, as healthcare in the US is pricey.

She’ll also need to check if she’s covered to hire and drive a car in the US, and what sports activities her policy covers. Becca might need Adventurous Sports cover, which covers a wide range of sports, depending on the activities she chooses.

What to watch out for

Becca should check her policy covers a high amount for treatment, because medical care in the US can cost a lot.

Also, Becca need to look at the local driving rules and car hire terms to make sure she's properly covered on the road. Comprehensive breakdown cover outside the UK will make sure she’s covered if her car breaks down overseas.

Trip 3 – Norwegian fjords cruise

What’s the plan?

Andrew, our Product owner, is going to be cruising the Norwegian coast. As well as soaking up the breathtaking views, Andrew plans to go on the Loen Skylift – one of the world’s steepest cable cars.

What travel cover do they need?

Andrew will need to add Cruise travel insurance to his policy. This will cover him for:

  • cabin confinement
  • missed port or departures

He’ll also need to check his policy book as limits and exclusions apply.

What to watch out for

Andrew will need to check his travel policy includes Cruise cover.

Heads up – if you’re going on a cruise too, you’ll need to add Cruise cover to your policy. You won’t be covered otherwise.

Trip 4 – honeymoon in Mauritius

What’s the plan?

Our Social media manager, Charlotte, is off on her honeymoon to the idyllic Mauritius.

“As you’ll no doubt have heard me talking about it endlessly, my fiancée and I are off to Mauritius for our honeymoon. Our itinerary includes paddleboarding, snorkelling, playing padel, going on a glass bottom boat trip, and maybe trying our hand at aerial yoga.”

What travel cover do they need?

Charlotte will need worldwide travel insurance to cover her honeymoon. Holiday cancellation cover is usually included in a travel policy. This is really important for big trips like honeymoons. Flying to Mauritius usually includes a stopover too, Enhanced Trip Disruption cover could protect her connecting flights.

She’ll need to check if her policy covers any of the water sports she plans to do, or if she’ll need to add Adventurous Sports cover to it.

If Charlotte’s taking an expensive camera to document the honeymoon, she could add Gadget cover to give her extra protection. This is an optional add-on that covers high-value tech like cameras, laptops or phones.

It’s also worth checking the limit on personal belongings to make sure valuables like wedding rings are covered.

What to watch out for

Charlotte will need to take a look at which water sports she needs to tell us about.

Some will be covered as standard – but with some extra risky ones, she might need to pay a little extra for them.

Trip 5 – staycation to Cornwall

What’s the plan?

Our Head of Brand, Katie, is off for a classic family staycation to Cornwall.

While staying at a self-catering house, they plan to spend their time surfing the Cornish sea, exploring the seaside towns and eating lots of Cornish pasties.

What travel cover do they need?

Katie could look at getting UK travel insurance to cover her family staycation. This is useful as it includes cancellation cover in case someone gets ill and they have to cancel.

It’s also worth Katie checking what she’s covered for in case there are any accidents at the property.

What to watch out for

A lot of travel policies don’t include UK trips, so Katie will need to check to see if hers does.

Our guide on whether you need travel insurance for UK holidays covers why it might be useful to have UK insurance.

She might also need to tell her insurer that her or her family are going surfing, so they’re covered if anyone has an accident.

Trip 6 – family holiday to Jávea, Spain

What’s the plan?

Claire, our ECRM marketing executive, is heading off on her annual trip to Spain with six of her family members.

“We’ve been going every year for the last 15 years, so it’s a bit of a tradition now. Alongside the usual routine of swimming, eating patatas bravas and sipping mojitos, this year I’m keen to try something new. I’m planning to give padel a go for the first time at the local tennis club.”

What travel cover do they need?

Claire and her family will need European travel cover for their Spain holiday. This will include cover for medical expenses and some cancellation reasons – these will be listed in the policy book.

She might also want to check if her and her family’s personal belongings are covered.

What to watch out for

Because Claire is travelling in a large group, it’s worth checking what she’s covered for if one of them can’t go.
