What is Enhanced Trip Disruption cover?

Flight delayed? Transport overbooked? Don’t worry, our Enhanced Trip Disruption cover means you’re protected if your transport from or to the UK is delayed for six hours or more.

You can add Enhanced Trip Disruption as an optional add-on to your travel insurance to cover those out-of-pocket expenses that come with being delayed.

It means you can travel knowing you’re protected for certain losses you can't get back such as extra travel costs to reach your destination.

Do I need Enhanced Trip Disruption insurance?

If you've booked a holiday abroad or in the UK, this add-on gives you extra protection against travel disruption - on top of what your travel insurance already covers you for.

For example, by adding Enhanced Trip Disruption cover, you're covered for situations like airspace closure or technical issues which might mean your flight is delayed or cancelled.

Enhanced Trip Disruption also covers you if your connecting transport on your outbound journey from the UK or inbound journey to the UK is disrupted. For example, if you miss your connection between countries outside of the UK, or your connecting flight is delayed for reasons we cover.

What we cover

Enhanced Trip Disruption cover means we have your back if you're delayed because of:

Mid-air emergencies

You're covered for any mid-air emergencies that delay your trip, as long as the emergency wasn't caused by you.

Certain airport problems

This includes things like airspace closures, air traffic control restrictions or technical issues.

Transport issues

Cover if your transport has been overbooked, airline crew going over working hours or there are delays on your connecting flights or scheduled public transport.

Check your policy book to see exactly what you are and aren’t covered for.

What we don't cover

There are some things that Enhanced Trip Disruption doesn't cover. These include:

  • onward travel expenses for missed departure or connections if there isn't at least 90 minutes between each leg of your UK outbound or return journey (or at least 30 minutes for UK trips)
  • unused accommodation expenses for delays less than 24 hours
  • travelling to countries the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) recommends not to
  • mid-air emergencies caused by you
  • claims for missed international departures if you've left the airport whilst waiting for a connecting flight
  • operational issues at the airport, port or station such as staff shortages or delays at check-in

Check your policy book for the full list of exclusions.

What are the benefits of Enhanced Trip Disruption cover?

If you’re worried about the unexpected costs that come with being delayed, then our Enhanced Trip Disruption add-on means you’re covered for most expenses and scenarios.

You can claim for:

  • extra accommodation
  • extra travel costs

For international departures, you can claim up to £500 per person for onward expenses because of a delay of over six hours.

Check your policy book so you know what you can claim for.

Travelling with pre-existing medical conditions

A pre-existing condition is any short or long-term illness, injury or medical condition that you've had at any time before buying travel insurance. This includes conditions that may have been treated with one-off or repeat prescriptions or, which have now been resolved.

A pre-existing condition includes things like urinary tract infections, diabetes, cancer and heart conditions. A pre-existing condition will:

  • have been identified by a medical professional before taking out a policy or
  • be symptoms that are being investigated by a medical professional (e.g. you're waiting for tests, scans) or
  • be a diagnosed condition you're waiting to be treated for by a medical professional (e.g. surgery)

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can cover them. It's really important that you tell us about your pre-existing conditions and give us the right information, because if you don't, we could cancel your policy or not pay for any claim you make, even if it's not related to the condition.

If you're not sure what needs to be declared, visit our medical conditions page to find out more.

MoneyHelper directory

If we can't cover your medical condition, you can use the MoneyHelper directory to find a specialist insurer who might be able to cover you if you've been:

  • refused travel insurance or had your policy cancelled
  • offered cover with a medical exclusion that you can't remove from your policy
  • quoted a price for a travel insurance policy with high medical costs

MoneyHelper makes it easier to find and compare policies you can afford that cover your condition and medical needs. Access the MoneyHelper directory online or call MoneyHelper on 0800 138 7777 (phone lines are open Monday to Friday 8:00am - 6:00pm, excluding bank holidays).
