What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you must pay in the event of any claim, regardless of who's to blame for the incident. The excess will vary depending on the car that is covered, the age and experience of the drivers on your policy and if you have opted to take protected or guaranteed No Claims Bonus protection. Details of your policy excess can be found on the reverse of your Policy Schedule.

Am I insured to drive abroad?

You’re covered to drive in

  • Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Channel Islands
  • Any other country in the European Union
  • Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia and Switzerland.

Your vehicle is also covered while being transported by air, sea or rail between these countries.

If there’s a no-deal Brexit, you’ll need a Green Card as well as your Certificate of Motor Insurance to drive your vehicle in the countries listed above. The Green Card is proof that you have the minimum level of insurance needed in the country you’re driving in. You must take the original Green Card as photocopies aren’t accepted.

If you’re concerned you may be abroad in one of the countries listed above in the coming months when there’s a chance we could leave the EU, you can request a Green Card using our online form.

What’s the difference between a courtesy car and hire vehicle cover?

Our comprehensive car insurance includes a courtesy car as standard, as long as your car's repairable and being fixed at one of our approved garages. You don't get a courtesy car if your car’s stolen or written off after an incident - to ensure you have a car if this ever happens you’d need to add our Hire Vehicle Cover upgrade to your Third Party Fire & Theft or Comprehensive cover.

What affects car insurance prices?

At Admiral, we look at a number of factors such as:

  • Age
  • Driving experience
  • Driving record (claims and convictions)
  • The type of car you drive
  • Car insurance groups

Your car insurance price explained takes you through how Admiral calculates your policy.

Are disability modifications covered?

Yes, modifications relating to a disability are covered. You’ll just need to let us know about them at the at the start of the policy and keep us updated if you make any other changes.

What happens if I need a courtesy car with disability modifications?

While we can’t guarantee a courtesy car will include the same disability or special need adaptations you may have on your own car, we make every effort to find something suitable for our customers.

What’s included in the Admiral’s standard lock cover?

If your car keys are lost or stolen outside of your car, we’ll pay up to £300 towards the cost of replacing the locks. Just send us the invoice and we’ll arrange payment up to the maximum amount of £300. So, if your invoice is only for £150, we’ll give you £150. This won’t affect your No Claims Bonus.  Admiral doesn’t cover the costs for getting car keys re-coded.
