If you're using your van to run a business, you might want to pop your logo or company name on the side.

But does this affect your van insurance at all? We’ve got the answers for you here.

What's van signwriting?

It’s any text or image visuals that you add to the outside of your van. That might include things like:

  • logos and slogans
  • images
  • company names
  • emails or contact numbers
  • website URLs

Signwriting is often used by people running a business using their van. For example, construction workers, cleaners or even mobile dog groomers.

It can come in a few forms, like vinyl wraps and magnetic panels. Vinyl wraps are popular for permanent signwriting, and magnetic panels are a good option for temporary signs.

Does van signwriting affect my insurance?

In some cases, yes.

The main reason why signwriting could affect your van insurance is because of the risk of theft.

Because you’re advertising what you do, thieves might think the van contains valuables like money, expensive equipment or tools. That means they may be more likely to try and break in.

This can increase your insurance cost in some cases, but not always.

Do I need to tell my insurer about signwriting on my van?

Some insurers, including us, count signwriting as a vehicle modification. That means you’ll need to tell us about it.

If you already have a policy with us, let us know if you've recently had any signwriting added to your van.

Or if you’re a new customer, you can tell us about it when you buy your policy.

We may need a picture of your van's signwriting, but we’ll let you know if that’s the case.

The benefits of van signwriting

There are a few handy benefits that come from using signwriting on your van.

Easier to identify

If your van is stolen, having a sign on it makes it easier for the police to find. It can also deter thieves in the first place, as they know the van will be more easily recognised if they steal it.

Helps promote your business

One of the top reasons people sign write on their van is to promote their business.

Having your company name and contact details on your van can help you get your name out there while you drive around.

Supports insurance claims

Signwriting shows that your van is connected to your business, which can help confirm the type of cover you need.

Make sure your van has the right class of use for what you're using it for.

What happens if I remove my van's signwriting?

Taking the signwriting off your van usually won’t affect your insurance.

But you could miss out on benefits like making your van easier to spot if it’s stolen or using it as free advertising for your business.

Is my van's signwriting protected by my insurance?

It depends on who you're with and what kind of cover you have.

If you've got comprehensive van insurance with us, your van's signwriting is covered up to £150 if it’s damaged by an accident, vandalism or fire.

Don't forget, there are some limits and exclusions to be aware of. Check your policy book to see what you're covered for.
