With EVs getting more popular, you might be wondering about making the switch from petrol or diesel to electric. But how much do EVs really cost to insure?
We’ve crunched the numbers to find our cheapest electric car insurance prices between July 2025 and June 2026*.
The cheapest EVs to insure with Admiral
Here’s a quick overview of the cheapest cars to cover on average with our EV insurance.

We’ll refer to the WLTP when discussing EV ranges through this. It’s short for Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure.
This is just a testing process to get an estimate of an EV’s range, but keep in mind that things like weather and road conditions can affect this.
1. Alpine A290

If you’re looking to drive an EV that’s small but packs a punch, look no further than the Alpine A290. This hatchback comes with up to 235 miles of range and a boot big enough to fit two suitcases. Road trip sorted!
It’s also got a great infotainment system on the dash for all your musical needs.
Our average price to cover the Alpine A290 between the dates mentioned was £439.47 for the year.
2. Renault R5 E-Tech

Like the Alpine A290, the Renault R5 E-Tech is a smaller EV that’s great for cities. It makes up to 255 miles of range and offers a comfortable, smooth drive.
This EV has a stylish interior, with a modern driver display and 10-inch infotainment screen. If it’s a fun design you’re looking for, the R5 E-Tech might be the one for you.
On average, insuring the Renault R5 with us between the dates popped above came to £448.08 a year.
3. KIA EV2

The KIA EV2 is a quirky SUV that could make a great choice for you and your lifestyle.
It has different ranges depending on which battery you choose. One has almost 200 miles of range, while the other has up to 283.
The boot space has your road trips covered, and it has a stylish interior with a nifty touchscreen infotainment system.
The average cost to insure the Kia EV2 with us between the dates mentioned was £457.84.
4. Renault Scenic E-Tech

The Renault Scenic E-Tech is a solid option for anyone who wants a sleek EV with a good range.
This stylish SUV comes with a very impressive range of 379 miles, putting it on the higher end of the scale for EVs. It’s also got a big boot, spacious interior and a sleek infotainment system.
However, the Scenic’s been criticised for its poor driving visibility, which is one to watch out for if you’re not used to larger cars.
The average price to insure the Scenic E-Tech with us in the time period we looked at was £465.81 a year.
5. Renault R4 E-Tech

Another of Renault’s electric models, the R4 E-Tech is the big brother of the R5.
One of the R4’s biggest pros is its 10-inch infotainment system that's speedy and easy to use. Its battery has a range of up to 250 miles, which isn’t too shabby for a smaller EV.
It can be a little cramped on the inside and takes longer to fast-charge than other EVs, so keep this in mind.
Our average price to insure the R4 E-Tech in the time period we looked at was £492.20 a year.
6. Dacia Spring

The Dacia Spring is a solid EV that comes at a low price point. It’s also cheap to run and has a funky exterior and interior with a solid infotainment system. The boot space comes in at two suitcases, which is fairly standard for a car of this size.
But with a lower price can often come a lower range, and the Spring maxes out at around 140 miles.
But if you’re mostly driving locally, this shouldn’t be an issue! Just keep an eye on the charge if you’re going further afield.
The average insurance price to cover the Spring with us in the time window we looked at was £499.47 a year.
7. Ford Puma Gen-E

The Puma Gen-E has a very similar build to its petrol alternative, so it’s a familiar face in the market.
It sports a decent range of up to 233 miles, like most of the other EVs on this list.
If you want an EV with a spacious boot, look no further. You can fit up to four suitcases in the Puma Gen-E, which is perfect for family holidays.
Compared to its petrol sibling, the Puma E-Tech is a little more cramped on the inside. So it could prove less than ideal for long drives.
On average, it cost £507.61 to insure the Puma E-Tech with us for the year between July 2025 and June 2026.
8. Hyundai Inster

The Hyundai Inster is a quirky EV that’s perfect for individuals and couples.
It’s on the smaller side, with a boot that can only fit one suitcase. But you can push the back seats down if you need more space.
The interior comes with a 10.5-inch infotainment screen, as well as a 10.5-inch driver dash screen.
The Inster can come with one of two different batteries. One gives a range of up to 203 miles and the other with a range of up to 229 miles. Keep this in mind when you’re choosing which version you want.
Between July 2025 and June 2026, we found that insuring the Inster with us cost £510.18 on average each year.
9. Renault Megane E-Tech

Yes, another Renault’s on the list!
Want an EV that catches the eye? The Megane E-Tech's a real contender. This super-sleek EV stuns inside and out, with a luxurious interior and top-level infotainment system.
The Megane E-Tech's range maxes out at 280 miles, which is upper-middle level for EVs.
Poor rear visibility is one of the Megane E-Tech's biggest weaknesses, so be aware of this before you buy.
The average cost of insuring the Megane E-Tech with us during the 12-month window we mentioned was £510.67.
10. Mini Aceman

The Aceman is a modern electric take on the classic Mini. But still has lots of the great features we’ve come to expect from this popular British brand.
It’s got a sleek interior with a unique infotainment display. Plus, its five doors make it more practical than the typical three-door Mini Hatch.
The Aceman’s range of up to 252 miles can easily get you around – just plan around longer drives to make sure you don’t run out of charge.
On average, it cost £512.15 to insure the Aceman with us for the year in the time window we mentioned above.
