Accidents abroad: Motorists urged to drive safely as claims rose by 57% last year

Admiral Insurance issues warning to drivers planning to drive in Europe this summer as claims for accidents abroad increase

With  summer well and truly upon us, Admiral Car Insurance is warning holiday makers to take care when driving abroad, after its data revealed the number of accidents in Europe  rose by 57% last year1.

The insurer’s data also revealed claims have been highest in August every year for the last five years, with the number of claims received in August 2022 192% higher than the monthly average for the year2.

The car insurance specialist has identified the most common destinations for accidents, the most common types of accidents and the most common cars involved to ensure drivers have a safe summer, including advice and tips for those who have accidents on their road trips abroad.

With many drivers heading across the channel on their summer break, the top accident abroad hotspot is our closest European neighbour, France, accounting for 42% of all claims received. Spain (10%), the Republic of Ireland and Italy (=8%) also appeared in the top five locations.
