New research from Admiral Travel Insurance has revealed that families reduce their Christmas costs BY HALF by reaching for their boarding pass instead of a Brussel sprout.
The data comparison from across travel operators and airlines reveals that a family of four could save 57% on their Christmas costs by spending a full week in Portugal. A seven-day getaway costs just £345 – equivalent to a £464 saving on what a four-person family will spend over Christmas (£809), on average.
In fact, the data reveals that Portugal is the cheapest ‘thriftscape’ for all traveller-types across the Christmas period, followed by Spain and Malta.
The research, which includes flights and 3-star accommodation obtained from 15 of the most popular winter destinations and compares them with the average household Christmas spend, suggests that Portugal offers couples big savings, too. Two people spending seven days in Portugal could save a thrifty £316, making it 57% cheaper to spend Christmas abroad. While Spain offers couples a significant £239 saving (42%), too.
