Security information and privacy policy

Guides and information on your privacy

Here's everything you need to know about keeping your data safe and prioritising your privacy.

What's a privacy policy?

A privacy policy is a legal document that explains how a company plans to use any personal information they collect about customers.

It covers what type of data we collect, why we collect it and how we might use it.

Your personal information

Personal information can look like a few different things. Really, it's anything that can be used to identify you. For instance, it could be your address or employment status.

We always want to be transparent with you about what data we use, how we collect it, and why we use it.

What personal information do we collect?

To provide you with services and products, we sometimes need to collect your personal information. Some examples of information we might need are your:

  • email address
  • home address
  • claims history
  • employment status
  • marital status

When do we collect your personal data?

Sometimes we collect your data through the forms you need to fill out to buy one of our products and services, or when you need to make a claim.

Sometimes it's by using cookies. These are small text files that are used to identify your device as you use a specific website or network.

They're used to recognise users so we can tailor your online experience to your preferences. This might be remembering what you looked at last time you were on our website.

You can choose to decline cookies at any time in your browser settings - although your online experience might be slightly different. Check out our Cookie Policy page.

How do we use your personal information?

There are a few ways we might use your personal information, including:

  • processing your quotes or finance applications
  • fraud detection and prevention
  • verifying your identity when we need to
  • handling your claims
  • doing market research
  • reviewing, developing and improving the services we offer

How do we share your personal information?

We usually share personal information across companies that sit within the Admiral Group.

Sometimes, we might have to share data outside our Group. Your privacy is always hugely important to us, and we try to minimise the data we share as much as possible.

For example, we might have to check your driving license number with the DVLA or your address against flood databases.

We're also required to share your data if:

  • we're legally compelled to
  • there's a duty to the public to disclose it
  • we must disclose it to protect our interest
  • you request for us to share it or with your consent

This gives you an understanding of some of the ways we might handle your personal identifiable information. For full details, read our Privacy and Security page.

What's a Subject Access Request (SAR)?

A Subject Access Request (SAR) is when you ask an organisation if they're storing your personal information, and to request copies of the information they have.

It's your right to request this if you want to, as anyone can make a SAR.

Once you've made your request, organisations usually have one month to respond.

Our data protection principles

At Admiral, we have lots of data protection processes in place to make sure all your personal information is safe.

Like all big companies, we're also subject to the data protection laws of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the UK.

How we protect your data

There are a few steps we take to protect your data:

  • We protect any data you give us by giving you a user ID and password
  • We use industry standard security to encrypt sensitive data when it's on the way to our servers
  • If we must transfer data to any service providers who are outside the EEA, we make sure your data is given an equivalent level of protection as it is in the EEA

How you can protect your data

While we do everything we can to keep your data safe, there are some things you can do too like:

  • keep your password safe and don't let anyone else know it
  • if you've entered your password on what you think might be a malicious website, let us know immediately and we can change your password
  • install anti-virus software on your laptop
  • don't respond to unsolicited emails from unfamiliar sources
