Need to drive – but not for long? Temporary cover is a short-term solution for sorting car insurance that you don't need all year round.
So, how does it work?
What’s temporary car insurance?
Temporary car insurance covers you for those short spans of time when you need to drive a car, but not permanently.
It works the same as regular car insurance, covering you for things like accidents, theft and fire. The big difference is it’s for the short-term.
For example, you might need to:
- borrow a family member’s car while yours is being repaired
- hire a car or van to pick up or drop off something
- drive a family member’s car while you’re back home from uni
- drive another car in an emergency
- add a family member to your policy for a short time
It can be for just an hour to a few months, depending on which insurer you choose and what you need it for.
How do I get temporary car insurance?
There are quite a few insurers who have temporary car insurance, including us.
Make sure you find out whether they offer the right kind of cover for you and for the right amount of time.
If you already have car insurance, you might be able to just give your insurer a call to see if they can sort temporary car insurance.
If you’re going with an insurer you’re not already with for regular car insurance, you’ll need your driving license and contact details to hand.
If you’re looking for temporary cover on someone else’s car, make sure you have the details of the owner and car.

What’s drive-away insurance?
After buying a new car, you’ll obviously need to drive it home – but you might not have taken out car insurance for your new wheels yet!
This is where drive-away insurance comes in. It’s there to cover you while you’re driving your car home after buying it, even if it’s a short journey.
Drive-away cover is quite common, so you’ll find plenty of insurers who offer it.
You can use our temporary car insurance as drive-away cover for your new vehicle (don’t worry, this applies to second-hand vehicles too!).
Can I use temporary car insurance if I’m a learner driver?
If you’re a learner driver, Veygo offers learner driver insurance for provisional licences.
You can have this cover for as long as you need until you pass. If you’re learning in someone else’s car, it won’t affect their no claims bonus either.
