What's travel insurance?

Travel insurance, also known as holiday insurance, protects you and your family against unexpected costs while you're abroad.

It covers the cost of things like:

  • medical expenses if you get ill or injured
  • if you have to cancel your trip
  • stolen belongings or lost luggage

What does travel insurance cover?

Here are just some of the things our travel insurance covers.

Emergency medical expenses

We cover reasonable and necessary emergency medical treatment costs if you get ill or injured in an accident abroad.

Delayed or missed departure

Delayed or missed your transport because of something unexpected? We'll cover reasonable costs for extra accommodation and travel.

Lost or stolen personal belongings

You can claim up to your policy limits if your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged.

Cancelling or cutting your trip short

We'll cover costs for things like deposits or unused accommodation if you have to unexpectedly cancel or cut your trip short.

Legal assistance

We'll support you with legal costs to help you claim damages or compensation for injury, illness or death during your trip.

Like with any insurance, our policies only cover certain situations - and policy limits and exclusions apply. Always check your policy book!

What isn't covered by travel insurance?

Here are some things that your travel insurance doesn't cover:

  • If your flight's cancelled or delayed because of something other than bad weather, strikes or a mechanical breakdown. But our Enhanced Trip Disruption cover covers you for more delay and cancellation reasons.
  • Claims for missed, delayed or cancelled flights that don't start or end in the UK (connecting flights), unless you've bought Enhanced Trip Disruption cover.
  • If you cancel your trip because you've changed your mind.
  • Any pre-existing conditions you should have declared but didn't.
  • Claims for costs caused by someone else's pre-existing medical condition. This means if their illness or death was caused by a condition they had before you bought your policy or booked your trip (whichever is later).
  • Lost or stolen items that you left unattended.
  • Claims where you can't give us evidence. For example, a police report or receipts.
  • Being denied entry because you don't have the right visa or passport.
  • Extreme sports, winter sports or cruise trips unless you've paid for the extra cover.

This isn't the full list and doesn't include exclusions for our specialist travel insurance. For example, winter sports or cruise cover.

For the full list of what isn't covered, check your policy book.

Do I need travel insurance?

You don't legally have to have travel insurance. But think about what you'd do if something went really wrong on your holiday.

If you get ill or injured, medical care can be very expensive abroad. Not all countries have free medical care like the UK does!

And it's not just about medical costs. What if you lost your entire suitcase? Or if your trip got delayed and you had to book new transport or accommodation?

Travel insurance is there to give you a safety net.

What type of travel insurance do I need?

Planning the trip of a lifetime? Or are you hopping from one getaway to the next? Find out which option's right for you below.

Single Trip Insurance

Cover for a single trip that lasts up to 365 days.

Annual Travel Insurance

Cover for as many trips as you like within 12 months. Each trip can last up to 31 days.

Need cover for longer than 31 days? Choose how long you want to go away for when you get a quote, and we might be able to cover you if you're eligible.

Can I get travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, you can get travel insurance with a pre-existing condition! You just need to tell us about it when you get a quote.

This is so we can offer the right cover and to avoid invalidating your policy.

We'll only cover you if you’ve:

  1. 1declared all the medical conditions we asked you about
  2. 2paid any extra costs in full

If you don't tell us about your pre-existing conditions:

  1. 1your policy might become invalid
  2. 2we could refuse all or part of any claim you make, even it's not related to your illness

What the experts say

Gary Mitchell, Senior Travel Product Manager

Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all! When you're getting a quote, think carefully about where you're going, what you're going to get up to and any pre-existing medical conditions. It's important we know these details, so we can make sure you have the right cover.
