Is van life for you?
Vans are no longer the remit of builders and tradesmen – more and more people in the UK are opting for a van so they can carry their kit for fun-seeking days out.
Whether it’s surfers heading to the coast, camping-loving families looking for the perfect pitching spot, or mountain-bikers heading up hill to hurtle back down on two wheels, private van use is a growing trend.
So if van life is appealing to you, here’s everything you need to know about getting the right cover for your new ride.

Levels of Private Van Insurance cover
While Admiral offers four different levels of cover, if you’re using your van just for fun, and you’re not commuting or making a living from it, you'll need Social cover.
It’s the perfect option if you plan to use your van for:
- Leisure activities that need a bit more space, like as surfing and fishing
- Family trips
- Band practice with your mates
If you plan on working or commuting, you’ll need to choose one of our other options: Goods and Tools, Haulage or Social and Commuting.
Next, you’ll need to decide how much cover you need. Just like car insurance, you can choose from:
- Third Party, Fire and Theft
- Third Party Only
£5,000 Personal Injury Cover
Get £5,000 of personal injury cover for you and your spouse.
Named Driver No Claims Bonus
Any Named Driver could earn themselves an Admiral No Claims Bonus for use with Admiral policies.
Sat-Nav and Personal Belongings Cover
If your personal belongings or effects are damaged or stolen while in your van, we'll pay up to £150 to help you replace them.
24 Hour Emergency Helpline
Comprehensive and third party, fire & theft customers can call if they have an incident and we're liable for the damage.
Insure a second van with us and, in most cases, we'll match your No Claims Bonus on that vehicle as well.
Unlimited cover for your vehicle's standard, permanently fitted audio or visual equipment.
Other levels of Private Van Insurance cover
If you don’t feel you need the full protection comprehensive cover offers, you can choose one of the following instead:
Third Party, Fire & Theft
Covers your van for damage caused by fire or theft but not if it’s damaged in another way, such as a crash. Admiral will pay out to the other driver if you're involved in an incident.
Third Party Only
This is the minimum cover you can get and protects you if you damage someone's property or you injure them while driving. It also covers your passengers if they suffer an injury while in your van. You aren’t covered if your van’s stolen or damaged in a fire.
Private Van Insurance Quote
When you're comparing prices for van insurance for personal use, it’s not all about choosing the insurer offering cheap van insurance - price shouldn't be your main deciding factor as you may not be getting the best cover available.
What you need to get a quick private van insurance quote
To get your quick van insurance quote, have the following bits of info to hand:
- Van registration number and details
We'll need to know the number of seats, details of when you bought the van and if it has any security features
- Driver details
Here we'll ask for the driver's name, address, job and driving history - things like claims and motoring offences
- Type of cover
You'll need to know what type of cover you want for your commercial van as well as your estimated mileage and where the van will be kept overnight
