‘Glampervanning’ on the rise due to Coronavirus

Coronavirus has driven more people to consider high end campers and caravans for a staycation this winter

Views for adverts featuring top end caravans and motorhomes costing between £50,001-£100,000 have increased 156% year on year, data from Auto Trader shows, as people plan a winter staycation during the ongoing pandemic.

A survey of 2,000 adults also found 71% of the Brits considering taking a holiday this winter would think about staying in a luxury caravan or motorhome.

Of those most likely to consider getting away in a caravan or motorhome, 95% are aged 18-44, with almost a third of this age group saying they’d spend more than £1,000 to rent a luxury caravan or motorhome for a holiday this winter.

Luxury is the key word here, it seems, as the research also found that a staycation in a campervan or caravan was only acceptable with some home comforts.

Top five most-wanted ‘luxuries’:

  1. Smart TV with Netflix
  2. Full cooking suite
  3. Sofa
  4. High speed in-built wi-fi
  5. Shower with decent pressure

A trip in a caravan or motorhome is thought to be a great way to have a holiday while sticking to lockdown restrictions as 18% of the adults aged 18-44 surveyed agreed, while 13% felt it’d be safer than a hotel or Airbnb this year.

These factors are thought to be partly behind the increase in demand for luxury motorhomes and caravans, along with celebrities taking to their glampervans to get away from it all this autumn and winter.

Auto Trader’s Editorial Director, Erin Baker said: “Staycations are set to remain popular for some time as Coronavirus shows little sign of slowing in the UK. Christmas in particular is likely to see a surge in the popularity of caravan and motorhome holidays as people look for inventive ways to spend time with loved ones, while still adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.

“However, the rusty caravan from people’s childhood trips isn’t cutting it anymore. The new generation of caravanners we are seeing want all mod cons. They’re following in the footsteps of popular celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jamie Oliver and are looking for bigger vehicles with the latest tech, to provide all the entertainment and convenience that they have at home.”
