The second-hand car market is booming in the UK. In 2017, more than eight million used vehicles changed hands, compared to 2.5 million new car registrations.

Attractive car finance deals are fuelling new car sales, but the squeeze on household budgets and economic uncertainty means that millions of buyers are looking for good used cars.

Finding the right second-hand car can be a daunting proposition, which is why awards from reputable sources such as What Car? magazine are really helpful.

The What Car? Used Car of the Year Awards 2019 consists of 15 categories divided into price points to better reflect the variety of cars available on the used car market. Scroll down to the table below and you can see the winners for each category, plus the runners-up.

The final decision on winners was taken by a panel of experts, based on the main criteria of quality, reliability, value and the availability of desirable versions.

Awards for German brands

Audi scored a hat-trick of category wins, taking titles for Used Family Car of the Year (Audi A3), Used Luxury SUV of the Year (Audi Q7) and Used Coupé of the Year (Audi TT). The Q7 and TT won their categories for the second consecutive year.

BMW also scooped three awards – for Used Executive Car of the Year (BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe), Used Hot Hatch of the Year (BMW M135i) and Used Convertible of the Year (BMW 6 Series).

However, the 2017 Mercedes E-Class Estate claimed overall victory. It won over the What Car? judges with its “luxurious and spacious interior, immense comfort and remarkable value-for-money”.

German car makers didn’t have it all their own way. For instance, there was repeat success for Mazda's impressive CX-5, which won Used Large SUV of the Year class for the second year running. Skoda picked up two awards for Used City Car of the Year (Skoda Citigo) and Used Small Car of the Year (Skoda Fabia).
