Tips for choosing the safest holiday destinations

Booking your summer getaway is meant to fill you with excited anticipation, so why does finding an idyllic holiday destination sometimes seem a little stressful?

Maybe it’s the fact we live in a world of 24-hour news and any dangerous event that occurs from Thailand to Timbuktu trends on social media within minutes.

But, whether the world really is a more dangerous place or we’re all just hyper-aware of global unrest because of rolling news, we can’t stop doing things which make us happy and holidays definitely make us happy!

Don’t forget to arrange travel insurance before you go, with Admiral Travel Insurance you can choose from Annual, Single, Golf or Cruise Cover.

So, where should you go if you’re looking for a low-risk holiday without missing out on any beautiful landscapes or excitement? We’ve found a few destinations which are well worth a visit this year.

A little bit out there – Mongolia

Well, if we’re going for different and a little bit out there why not start with a really unusual one?

Mongolia is full of rugged landscapes and tradition. According to government statistics, only 6,000 British nationals visit each year, so it’s about as far removed from an all-inclusive trip to Lanzarote as you can get.

In terms of safety, note the terror threat is low and most crime is non-violent. The risk of petty theft and pick-pocketing is quite high though, especially to foreign nationals so always keep valuables out of sight.

Fans of natural springs, historical tales and camping in yurts should look to the mysterious land between Russia and China for inspiration.

Colourful – Cuba

If you’re looking to take the perfect Instagram-worthy pictures then look no further than Cuba.

From the retro cars and colourful yet dilapidated architecture to the rum cocktails, Cuba is a real treat for all the senses.

According to the Government’s foreign travel advice guide, crime levels are low as is the risk of terrorism.

Weather-wise, June to November is hurricane season so it may be worth booking around these dates.

If you dream of drinking rum while sunning yourself on white sands next to crystal clear waters then what are you waiting for?

On target – Cape Verde

If you like it hot, hot, hot then get your flights to Cape Verde booked at once.

A former Portuguese colony, Cape Verde is made up of 10 islands and five islets and lies off the west coast of Africa.

This is becoming a hot honeymoon destination and you only need to do a Google image search to see why. The water is crystal clear, the sand is white and the there isn’t a cloud in the sky – sounds absolutely heavenly, if you ask us!

The threat of terrorism and crime rates are low, though it is wise to avoid unlit areas after dark. If you want to see what a mix of African, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures looks like, get booking!

How to stay safe while travelling

Check the foreign travel advice section of the GOV.UK website before booking your holiday to get an idea of the destination you wish to travel to.

If you have any concerns about outbreaks of illness in certain parts of the world you should check the World Health Organisation website for information and advice on safe destinations. Regular updates on the Ebola and Zika virus are listed, for example.

You should also check if vaccinations are required before you travel and make sure to have them done in plenty of time. And of course, make sure your travel insurance covers you in the country you’re in.
