Plug-in vans eligible for government grant named

21/02/2012

The Government has published its list of ultra-low carbon vans that qualify for the Plug-in Van Grant incentive. The vehicles are eligible for up to a £8,000 discount as the government aims to boost the market for low-carbon commercial vehicles in the UK.

Each qualified van will be eligible for a 20 per cent reduction in price, with VAT businesses able to reclaim the VAT at full list price as well as the discount. This applies to vans already on sale, or that will arrive on the market this year.

Grant-qualifying vans must emit less than 75g/km worth of CO2, and be capable of travelling for at least 60 miles between battery charges and able to reach speeds of more than 50 mph. The vans must also meet European safety standards.

Vans that qualify for the grant are: the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL, Renault Kangoo Z.E. (plus variants), the Faam Ecomile, the Faam Jolly 2000, the Mia U and the Ford Transit Connect Electric.

"The Plug-In Van Grant and today's detail on the seven models eligible is excellent news for van drivers, operators, businesses and the industry," the SMMT's chief executive Paul Everitt told Fleet News.

"The savings on the initial purchase price, coupled with the tax advantages and very low running costs make a plug-in van an attractive proposition - particularly for those running local and back-to-base services."

The SMMT stressed that the early adoption and development of the low-carbon vehicle market in the UK will help the country stay at the forefront of this rapidly developing sector, bringing many benefits to the UK motorist and car insurance policyholders.
