The proposed MoT reforms made by the government to lower frequency of MoT testing have been dropped.
The MoT will now remain an annual test, despite previous government plans to move the test to four years after manufacture and every two years afterwards.
The changes to the test were proposed after fears the original MoT legislation written in the 1960's could be outdated when applied to modern day vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport announced the decision after figures released by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) showed a sizable proportion of vehicles were not being assessed properly.
According to the VOSA statistics, more than 25 per cent of vehicles tested in 2010-2011 had at least one incorrectly assessed defect. It also showed one in eight cars had been incorrectly assessed during an MoT.
Transport Minister Justine Greening said: "Our garages are crucial to ensuring that Britain's roads continue to be among the safest in the world. Most are doing good work, but the latest data shows that there is room for improvement."
"I want each motorist to be confident that a visit to the garage ends with their car repaired to a high standard by reputable mechanics rather than uncertainty about cost and the quality of service."
In order to reduce the amount of MoT centres incorrectly assessing vehicles, the government is setting up a new initiative to improve the performance of MoT testing stations and creating a user generated review system of MoT stations.
Help will also be provided for motorists and car insurance policy holders to spot 'clocked' cars by changing the layout of MoT certificates to include mileage data covering the vehicle's previous three years on the road.
