Electric dream closer to becoming reality

30/09/2010

The fastest ever electric road car has been unveiled at the Paris motor show. Jaguar developed the C-X75 concept car which has a top speed of 205mph, according to The Daily Telegraph. It can also travel for 560 miles without needing to be recharged, which marks a massive level of progress for the car producer, with the industry peak currently around 100 miles. Chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, Ralf Speth said: "The C-X75 demonstrates that Jaguar is still leading the field automotive design and technology. And will always continue to build beautiful, fast cars." The notable increase in charge capability is due to a British engineer, who created a gas turbine system for Bladon Jets, which is based in Shropshire. It has catapulted the car's recharge beyond its basic range and provides extra power to the four electric motors driving the wheels. The car manufacturer is also one of the six winning teams selected by the Government to develop the UK's low carbon vehicle capability. Earlier this month the Government published the eligibility criteria for a £5,000 grant scheme available to people buying into the idea. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond upped the stakes, awarding £24 million to develop the programme. Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Lotus are all working on ways to create engines that are hybrid versions of their own, as well as lightweight electric bin wagons and development of other technologies.
