A drivers' group is offering tips on priming cars for warmer weather, as the Met Office predicts rising temperatures this weekend.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) suggests that now is the time to "spring clean" cars, clearing bodywork - including the underside of the car - of corrosive salt which may have built up over the winter. In addition, the group recommends replacing a car's pollen filter annually, and servicing the air conditioning system - advising that a stale smell can be evidence of a build-up of mould.
Meanwhile, the IAM is also warning that ash from the recent Icelandic volcanic eruption could damage windscreens. It suggests that old windscreen wiper blades are replaced and washer fluids topped-up.
IAM Chief Examiner Peter Rodger said: "After a long winter of wear and tear through snow, salt and potholes - and now volcanic dust - your car will be in need of a little TLC.
"Being prepared for the summer and making checks now can save you a lot of money in the long run.
"Try to deal with any minor problems and repairs as they happen, as they can become very expensive if left to build up over time."
The advice comes as the Met Office predicts one of the hottest days of the year so far for this Sunday's London Marathon when it says that temperatures will rise to 22C. It warns that the "very warm and humid" conditions are likely to "favour spectators rather than the runners".
In addition, the Met Office says, temperatures around the country will be "well above average".
Forecaster John Hammond told the Daily Mail: "We are looking at the warmest weekend of the year so far... as winter turns into summer".
