The finalists for the World Car of the Year awards have been announced at the Geneva International Motor Show.
The Mercedes E-Class, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen Polo were selected from a shortlist of 10, itself produced from 30 initial entries that comprised new vehicles from around the world. To be eligible for the award - which recognises the overall 'best' car - a vehicle had to have been in production and being sold in at least two continents during 2009.
Now in their seventh year, the awards are designed to complement the regional Car of the Year awards in order to "reflect the reality of the global marketplace". The 2010 competition sees Volkswagen attempting to win its second straight title, following the company's success last year with its sixth-generation Golf.
And the Polo - itself now in its fifth generation - is the current European car of the Year, after pipping Toyota's IQ city car to the title in November.
In addition to the overall award, where a mainstream car "must excel in a broad range of attributes", the World Performance Car title is open to overtly sports-orientated cars with a minimum production run of at least 500 vehicles. It will be decided between the Audi R8 V10, Ferrari's California, and the Porsche 911 GT3.
Meanwhile, the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen's BlueMotion Polo, Gold and Passat variants will contest the World Green Car category, while the finalists in the World Car Design award are the Chevrolet Camaro, Citroen C3 Picasso, and the Kia Soul.
The winners are set to be announced at April's New York International Auto show.
