London public transport 'lagging behind' Euro cities

London has been placed far down a league table of major European cities in a survey that examined public transport.

Ranked 20th out of the 23 cities evaluated, the UK capital's public transport provisions were rated merely as 'acceptable' by the EuroTest survey.

London received 'good' ratings for travel times and ease of transfers - along with the highest available rating for information provision - but it fell down heavily on ticketing and fares.

While the Oyster card system was praised, the dossier on the capital highlighted complicated and expensive ticketing - especially when switching between the tube and the bus.

In addition, London was singled out for an attack on its "famous" congestion-charging system on the grounds that "pragmatic and realistic solutions" were needed to meet mobility challenges, and that congestion charging schemes "do not necessarily result in the best public transport provision".

Carried out under the aegis of the FIA European Bureau between October and December last year, the survey considered transport provided by rail, underground, the Docklands Light Railway and buses. Led by German automobile club ADAC, it rated only Munich as 'very good'. Eleven more cities were rated 'good', while nine were judged to be 'acceptable'.

Meanwhile Ljubljana and Zagreb, which finished in the bottom two places, were given no grade at all.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said that the UK capital "obviously still has a long way to go" to live up the quality and cost standards established by Munich.

"The survey clearly shows that if we are to tempt more Londoners out of their cars, we need to ensure our tube, train and bus systems are more accessible and affordable," he added.
