A combination of delayed travel from yesterday and continuing wintry conditions for much of the UK threatens a busy Christmas Eve on the roads.
A week ago, the AA estimated that 23 December would be one of the busiest driving days, but it is thought than some travellers will have delayed journeys planned for yesterday in the hope of improved road conditions.
Weather conditions appear to be easing, but on Christmas Eve morning the Met Office had severe weather warnings in place for much of the UK. Only western and northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and south east England and East Anglia were predicted to be free of severe weather.
Most of the warnings relate to icy roads, with Lothian and Borders in Scotland also likely to see further heavy falls of snow.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety for the AA, told BBC News that motorists should be prepared to postpone their travel plans.
"Christmas can always be rolled back a day," he said.
"Think safety before obligation."
On Tuesday two women were killed and 46 people injured when a coach left the road and overturned in icy conditions in Cornwall, while returning from a visit to see Christmas lights in the village of Mousehole.
