The Ford Focus has been named the most popular car of the decade, according to a poll by Auto Trader magazine, which saw the family hatchback beat its smaller Fiesta stablemate into second place.
Ford dominated the top five, with the Mondeo taking fourth place, while BMW's 3 Series compact executive took third place, and Vauxhall's Astra finished in fifth position.
Last year, buyer's guide Whatcar? held up the Focus as 2008's 'best used buy', while in January the same magazine crowned a Fiesta model as its car of the year.
The Auto Trader poll, which attempted to analyse key trends of the last ten years, also named the Fiat Panda supermini as the car offering the best value for money, while Toyota's Prius hybrid was voted the top green car. Satellite navigation was crowned as the decade's best optional extra.
In addition, the poll looked at some of the less practical developments of the last ten years.
The Bugatti Veyron, which can sell for upwards of £1 million, came top in both the 'beyond your wildest dreams' and 'overpriced' categories, while the best vehicle for celebrities was the Range Rover. Meanwhile, Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was voted the best motoring personality, and the 'Baby on Board' sign was named the number one car accessory.
Auto Trader marketing director Matt Thompson said that the first decade of the 21st century had ushered in a range of new ideas.
"From the emergence of eco-friendly cars as a viable option for consumers to the replacement of maps and asking for directions with in-car SatNav, the noughties have provided some interesting changes to the way consumers think about and drive their cars," he said.
