Check employees' cars suitable for business use, firms urged

30/11/2009

Employers are being urged to check that workers' private cars are roadworthy and insured before allowing them to be used for business.

And employees themselves should be prepared to provide details of their driving license, the body which oversees business rental and leasing has said.

The chief executive of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, John Lewis, made his call for a "zero tolerance policy" last week at a conference examining so-called 'grey fleets' in the public sector.

Citing Office of Government Commerce case studies, he claimed that public sector organisations could save money, reduce emissions and improve road safety by using leased or rented vehicles rather than those belonging to staff.

And Lewis warned that some firms were paying mileage claims at too high a rate.

"Many employers are giving mileage payments of 50, 60 or even 70p per mile, which is far above the maximum tax free... rate of 40p per mile," he added.

Accident-prevention charity RoSPA, which is concerned with both road and occupational safety, has previously highlighted a need for driver training to reduce casualties among those who must drive for their jobs.

Launching an initiative for Scottish workers earlier this year, the charity pointed out that around a third of all UK road accidents involve someone who is driving for work, saying that employers were "well-placed to make a real difference to road safety" across the country.
