The public is in favour of allowing motor insurers greater power to check drivers' records, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed.
And research conducted for the organisation suggests that drivers are more worried about the cost of motoring than other factors such as congestion, the condition of the roads, or even fellow motorists.
The results, taken from a poll of 2,000 people conducted for the ABI by YouGov, come as insurers discuss gaining access to driving license records to check for relevant convictions or endorsements. The industry argues that access to the information would allow it to screen for motorists who conceal offences, such as speeding, or driving while holding a mobile phone, in order to obtain a cheaper quote.
Asked how they would feel about having to provide a driving licence number when obtaining a quote for car insurance, 72% of respondents who drive either supported or strongly supported the idea, compared to just 7% who opposed or were strongly against it.
"Honest motorists are fed up with drivers who lie and cheat to try to obtain cheaper insurance," said ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling.
"Those who conceal motoring offences not only push up the cost of insurance for everyone, but also run the risk of having any claim rejected," he added.
