Petrol prices stand at their highest point of 2009 and are only set to rise in the approach to Christmas, according to the AA.
The motoring organisation warned that prices were historically high and that they were having a 'devastating' effect, adding that the trend suggested a possible record would be reached by Christmas.
The average cost of a litre of unleaded petrol stood at 107.1p earlier this week, the association said, while the average litre of diesel was 108.4p - also a record for the year.
However, according to PetrolPrices.com the situation has already worsened. It found that the average litre of unleaded had risen to 107.6p yesterday, while diesel was 108.9p. Meanwhile, some motorists are paying up to 118.0p for petrol and up to 119.9p for diesel at the most expensive pumps.
And the Evening Standard warns that prices in London could be primed to burst through the 120 pence-per-litre mark, as the value of crude oil again rose above $80 a barrel.
AA head of public affairs Paul Watters said that higher prices had arrived at the wrong time, as winter motoring increases fuel consumption.
"This is bad news for families trying to make ends meet in [a] recession," he added.
