Target-chasing by police could be behind a surge in middle-aged 'criminals', according to Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne.
The party's home affairs spokesman said Government figures - obtained through a Parliamentary answer - show that a generation of over 40s have been 'criminalised' by an over-zealous justice system.
Sixty-five over-40s 'become a criminal' for the first time each day, meaning that their first conviction or caution is recorded on the police national computer. Between 2000/01 and 2007/08 there was a 46.3% jump in people over 50 becoming criminals - from 16,400 to 24,000. In the same period, the 40-49 age group saw a 57.4% increase, while the general population saw a rise of just 18.6%.
Even minor motoring offences usually dealt with by a fine - such as using a mobile phone - can go to court if challenged, leading to a criminal conviction.
Mr Huhne said that the figures are the result of the Government's "target-driven, box-ticking approach to policing".
"This government has created a new crime for every day in office," he added.
However, according to the Home Office, only one centrally-set police target remains in place after cuts to ensure that officers "are no longer driven by meeting multiple national targets".
