Private clamping 'on the rise'

19/10/2009

The number of cars being clamped may have risen by 64% in 12 months, a study has found.

And calculations by insurance company LV suggest that private clamping firms netted £58 million over the same period, while local authority clampers raised an extra £21 million.

The research is based on a June 2009 survey of 500 motorists who said that they had previously been clamped. Of these, 190 had been immobilised in the preceding 12 months - 123 by private firms, 45 by a local authority and 22 by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

In contrast, 116 of the 500 said that they had been clamped between one and two years ago.

The Home Office is considering how to better regulate the parking enforcement industry, in the wake of a consultation this summer. While it has been suggested that industry body the British Parking Association could take on a regulatory role, motoring groups have called for the setting up of an independent body.

Calling for better regulation and "an end to heavy-handed tactics", LV managing director John O'Roarke said: "Private clampers make millions every year, and in some cases are using intimidating and aggressive tactics to raise money from drivers who have unknowingly parked in the wrong place."
