New car registrations rose again in September, industry data has revealed.
Some 367,929 cars were registered during the month, up by 11.4% on the 330,295 sold in the same month last year.
September, during which a new number plate prefix starts, is typically the car industry's strongest period of the year: last month's sales dwarf the 67,006 cars that found a home in August.
Releasing the figures, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) noted that small cars had sold particularly well, and attributed the 'market momentum' to the scrappage scheme.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt added that market conditions remained challenging, but welcomed the additional scrappage funding announced last week by the business secretary, Lord Mandelson.
"The extension of the scheme will help to sustain demand through the latter part of this year and into 2010," said Everitt.
"This will allow economic recovery to strengthen and safeguard valuable industrial capability."
