Distracted drivers were responsible for 5,870 road deaths in the United States last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
And Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is mooting law changes and a publicity campaign to make driving while distracted "feel wrong".
Unlike in the UK, where using a hand-held mobile while driving was outlawed in February 1999, the US has no specific national restrictions on doing so.
In the Admiral Survey of British Motorists, a quarter of drivers admitted having used their mobile phone at the wheel since it was banned. UK accident statistics reveal that in 2008, mobile phone use contributed to 16 fatal road accidents and a further 60 serious ones.
In research published this week by Diamond Car Insurance, 18% of women admitted having applied makeup while driving, and 3% that doing so had caused an accident.
Last year's UK statistics attribute 69 fatal crashes to distractions within the vehicle, with distractions of all kinds contributing to around 3% of accidents recorded by police.
LaHood also highlighted in car equipment as a cause for concern.
"We'll work with the industry on this, but the idea you can have these kinds of on-board devices - computers or whatever - it's a distraction," he said.
