The largest electric car charging scheme outside of London will be launched this week in Brighton and Hove.
The first of 10 public electric car-charging points in the south coast city is due to be unveiled on Friday by council leader Mary Mears. The charging stations will serve plug-in hybrids, and electric cars that mostly have a range of less than 100 miles.
London currently has more than a hundred on-street charging points, and in April mayor Boris Johnson said that he wanted to introduce 25,000 stations to the city's streets in a bid to swell the city's electric car fleet to more than 100,000 vehicles.
The Brighton and Hove scheme has been partially funded by the European Civitas Archimedes Project, which is working in six European cities to help prototype environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient transport.
Brighton & Hove City Council won £2.2 million from the project to invest in small-scale transport schemes, which include car-sharing and road safety improvements. It is also working with freight companies to improve energy-efficiency, and in local schools to improve awareness of emissions from travel.
Representatives from Denmark, Spain, Romania, the Czech Republic and Italy will visit the city to see the schemes in action. Councillor Mary Mears said: "We're proud to be able to share our expertise with other countries on how to achieve a clean and energy-efficient transport system.
"It's exciting to think that what we do here will influence future transport policy, not only in the UK but also in Europe."
