The agency that maintains the UK road network has outlined how it plans to improve access for people with disabilities.
In a short report, Disability - Accessibility of the Strategic Road Network, the Highways Agency explains that it has taken steps to improve its consultation with groups representing disabled people. It says that "preliminary consultations" have highlighted the need to improve the accessibility of bus stops, emergency roadside telephones, footpaths and road crossings.
The report acknowledges that, while modern road improvement schemes include features such as tactile paving and raised kerbs that make it easier to board buses, much of the road network "was constructed many years ago at a time when there was little accessibility guidance".
"Our new schemes already provide for the needs of disabled people, but we are now embarking on a programme to improve our existing infrastructure," explained the agency's director of network services, Ginny Clarke.
"The consultation which we have undertaken with specialist disability organisations will help us to determine where changes could be made that would give improved accessibility, and how best to implement them.
"We are also continuing to raise awareness of disability issues within the agency and our supply chain, to ensure that there is an integrated approach to network improvement."
