Bank holiday traffic to be 'worst this year'

26/08/2009

The coming bank holiday weekend will see the busiest roads in the UK this year, the AA has warned.

The motoring organisation says that congestion could rise by a third, as families take a last-minute break before schools go back and cash-strapped holidaymakers continue to remain in the UK.

In an AA/Populus poll, 8% of people said that they had decided not to travel abroad this summer, with a further 15% saying that they planned to stay close to home within the UK. The survey of more than 21,000 people also found that almost a third of respondents (32%) who were planning a trip were considering visiting the seaside.

The organisation advised motorists to take simple steps to keep their journeys bearable, including making basic checks on their car and travelling with plentiful refreshments.

"It's going to be very busy on the roads," said AA patrol of the year Stewart Topp. "As well as families heading off before schools go back, there's also a full schedule of music festivals, airshows, sports fixtures and other major events.

"The worst of the traffic will be when people head home on bank holiday Monday evening and then return to work on the Tuesday," he said.

On Monday, the Highways Agency said that it would be suspending 31 sets of roadworks between Friday 28 and Tuesday 31 August.

Derek Turner, director of network operations, explained: "We expect the roads to the main holiday centres, ports and airports will be busy so we're doing everything we can to help drivers with their journeys."
