The UK drink drive limit should be lowered, the country's lead traffic policeman has said.
And Mick Giannasi, also chief constable of Gwent, stressed that motorists were not safe to drive after "a couple of pints".
Giannasi's comments come as the Government considers lowering the UK limit to bring the country more into line with Europe. The current drink limit, set in 1967, allows for 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, one of the highest levels in the continent.
Using new breathalyser machines that show precisely how much alcohol is in the body, traffic police are recording drink levels in thousands of accidents that involve drivers who are under the influence of alcohol, but still within the legal limit.
A Department for Transport study will use the data to assess whether alcohol consumption within the law is associated with a high number of accidents.
Giannasi urged the Government to lower UK limits and remove any confusion among the public.
"There are still people who say, 'I can have a couple of pints,'" he said. "The truth is you can't because every drink impacts on your ability to co-ordinate your movements."
A spokesperson from road safety charity Brake said: "We still have one of the highest drink drive limits in the European Union.
"Ultimately we would like to see the limit reduced even further still and the adoption of a 'not a drop' policy."Yesterday, motoring organisation The AA warned that UK drivers could fall foul of stricter drug-driving enforcement in France.
