Production of new cars in the UK fell by 30.2% in June, compared to the same month in 2008.
Just 91,798 cars were manufactured last month, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Production for the year-to-date is 50.2% down on the same period in 2008, with fewer than 411,000 cars having been produced in the first half of 2009.
The decline in manufacturing has been partly driven by temporary factory closures - including Honda's operations in Swindon - as car makers have scaled back production.
Despite this, June's shortfall was the smallest decline of the year so far - a fact which industry experts hope points to a recovery in the sector.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt looked ahead to the stabilisation of production volumes and registrations, and called on the Government to "sustain consumer confidence and encourage banks to deliver the credit [that the] industry needs".
"The UK motor industry is weathering the global recession and beginning the long road to recovery," he added.
However, total vehicle production figures, which include commercial vehicles, made less encouraging reading for the industry.
Total production was down 34.5% on June 2008, and down 52% on the year-to-date figures.
Everitt said that poor commercial vehicle production figures - down more than 60% in June versus 2008 - reflected the "fragile business confidence in key markets" - most noticeable in road haulage and construction.
Almost 80% of the cars produced in the UK this year have been for the export market.
