The Government has pledged extra funding to a police intelligence unit dedicated to the fight against organised vehicle crime.
Working with a budget of £300,000 for the coming year - up from £200,000 - the Association of Chief Police Officers' Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) will continue to combat high-technology vehicle crimes.
Announcing the grant, Home Office minister Alan Campbell said that it would go towards tackling the "constantly evolving challenge of vehicle crime".
Activities targeted by the service include 'cloning' of legitimate cars' identities to use on stolen vehicles, or stealing high-performance cars to order then shipping them abroad. Its other work includes identifying emerging trends in vehicle crime, and recovering stolen vehicles.
More than 1,400 vehicles have been recovered through AVCIS since its launch in December 2006, while the total value of recovered assets stands at more than £32.5 million.
The service's achievements come against a backdrop of plummeting vehicle crime, which has fallen by two-thirds since its 1995 peak, according to the Home Office report Crime in England and Wales 2007-2008.
Head of AVCIS, acting detective chief inspector Mark Hooper, said: "We are operating in a dynamic and ever-changing environment as organised criminals adapt to overcome security measures and evade detection."
