60,000 orders under scrappage scheme

16/06/2009

The Government has released figures today showing that 60,000 cars have been bought under the scrappage scheme.

Although the scheme only got underway on May 18, the figures claimed by the Government cover the period from 22 April - when it was first announced in the Budget - to 7 June.

The initiative, which the industry had been calling out for since earlier this year, is funded equally between the Government and the major car manufacturers themselves - all of which are now on board.

It allows motorists who own a car or small van which was registered before 31 August, 1999, to scrap the vehicle in return for a £2,000 discount on a new purchase.

The Government's plan was to kick start car sales, which had tailed off sharply towards the end of 2008 and over the first few months of 2009.

However, despite the success of the scheme, some in the industry have worried that the demand will exhaust the £300 million funding, which the Government has set aside, before the March 2010 deadline.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, who was an advocate of the scheme, previously hailed the 35,000 orders which had been placed towards the end of May.

And now he says that car manufacturers are continuing to see rising sales.

"Consumers know a good deal when they see one," Lord Mandelson added.

"It's the boost that the industry needs."
