More than 35,000 cars have been ordered through the Government's scrappage scheme since its announcement last month, official figures show.
According to the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), one in every five cars ordered over the period was bought under the scheme. Business secretary Lord Mandelson - who advocated the scheme - hailed the figures as "impressive".
The initiative, which is funded equally between the Government and participating car manufacturers, got underway on Monday, 18 May. It is aimed at stimulating short-term sales, and at replacing older models with vehicles that are more fuel efficient.
Motorists who scrap a car or small van that was registered before the end of August 1999 become eligible for a £2,000 discount on the price of a new vehicle. The scrapped vehicle must have been registered with the current owner for at least one year, and have a current MOT certificate.
While some of the major manufacturers - including giants Ford and Fiat - delayed taking part at first due to confusion over VAT payments, they came on board two days later. Some 38 car companies are now participating.
However, the scheme has finite funding from the Government of £300 million, and operates on a first come, first served basis.
Lord Mandelson said: "The scrappage scheme has got off to a flying start.
"It has given car sales a major boost and offers consumers a great deal."
