The buyers of small and affordable cars will benefit the most from the Government's recently-introduced car scrappage scheme, according to Which? Car.
And the consumer magazine warns that scrappage may not be the best option for all buyers, particularly those who plan to buy an expensive car.
Under the scrappage scheme, motorists with a car aged 10 years or more, who have owned it for at least one year, are eligible for a £2,000 discount on the price of a new car when they scrap their old one.
Which? Car says that some manufacturers are offering greater discounts on some larger cars, but highlights that a £2,000 discount on a car with a list price of £10,000 or less equates to a discount of at least 20%.
It lists five new cars now available for less than £5,000, the cheapest of which - at £4,195 - is the Kia Picanto.
Which? Car editor Richard Headland warned buyers not to assume that a £2,000 discount was a good deal on cars costing more than £10,000.
"On more expensive cars, shop around for a bigger scrappage discount or check if buying second-hand is cheaper," he said.
"If so, it may pay to sell your old banger instead of scrapping it."
