Essex County Council has vowed to fill in potholes, putting a stop to a parish council's plan to let them act as a natural traffic calming measure.
Earlier this week it emerged that Navestock Parish Council had decided not to report potholes for repair, on the grounds that poor road surfaces imposed a "natural speed limit".
Councillor Adrian Enkel said that the parish would not "badger" the county council to conduct repairs, but resident Roy Tyzack spoke out against this, claiming that the attitude beggared belief.
"Potholes, and we have a great deal of them, are very dangerous," he added.
And on Thursday, Essex County Council - which has responsibility for upkeep of the county's roads, made it clear that it would repair potholes "as soon as possible".
Eric Hume, Essex County Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, described the parish council's idea as "interesting", but added that it was the county's policy to fill all potholes as soon as practical.
"Therefore, regrettably in this instance, we will have to take the opposite view from the parish council."
Duncan McClure Fisher, spokesperson for campaign website Potholes.co.uk, said that ignoring the potholes would have been "irresponsible".
"It's unbelievable that councillors, who have a duty of care to their residents, would actively choose to leave potholes unfilled," he said.
