Every day last year, police seized an average of more than 465 vehicles that had no car insurance, it has emerged.
Over 170,000 vehicles were seized over the full year, more than double the 78,000 impounded in 2006 - the first full year in which police had the power to seize vehicles being driven without insurance.
Announcing the figures, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) said that automatic number plate recognition systems, together with improved access to the Motor Insurance Database (MID), had contributed to the increased detection rate.
"Driving without insurance is not a victimless crime," added Hertfordshire chief constable Frank Whiteley.
"It is estimated that uninsured and untraced drivers kill 160 people and injure 23,000 every year."
There are 1.6 million uninsured vehicles on the UK's roads, according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) - which maintains the MID database of all insured vehicles, and compensates people involved in accidents with uninsured drivers.
MIB chief executive Ashton West explained that law-abiding motorists each contributed almost £30 a year toward compensating those injured by uninsured drivers.
"The message is clear," he added.
"Uninsured drivers have no right to use their vehicles on our roads and when they do, they are being caught."
A Department for Transport consultation on proposals to make vehicle insurance compulsory closes on 16 April.
