Drivers and motorcyclists should take extra care this spring, as they share roads that have been damaged by the winter weather, the AA has warned.
The motoring group says that the arrival of spring will lead to many of the nation's 1.6 million motorbikes getting their first outing for many months - and warns that bikers and other road-users will need to readjust accordingly.
A 2004 report by the University of Nottingham suggested that there was a particular problem involving other road users' perception of motorcycles, particularly at junctions, where many motorcycle crashes occur.
"Such accidents often seem to involve older drivers with relatively high levels of driving experience who nonetheless seem to have problems detecting approaching motorcycles," it said.
Calling on drivers to take extra care this spring, the AA's Simon Douglas said: "The skills of many motorcyclists need polishing too after a long lay-up."
He added that it was important for both car-drivers and motorcyclists to be aware of the risks, as otherwise "the results can be tragic".
The association warned that the problem could be compounded this year by poor road repair. It estimates that the winter's severe weather increased damage to the roads by 40% above normal levels - meaning that there are likely to be around 1.5 million potholes across the UK.
In February, the Local Government Association warned road users that the "freeze-thaw" of winter weather had caused "gaping sores" in the country's road network.
