The number of people opting for a UK driving holiday could surge this year, as drivers look to save money in the recession.
And councils have urged holidaymakers to stay in the UK and give British businesses a lift.
Councillor Chris White of the Local Government Association acknowledged that many families needed time away, but added: "Britain has a massive range of holiday locations, all reachable without a passport or hours of waiting at an airport terminal."
He added that a UK holiday was a "win-win situation" for holidaymakers and businesses.
"Beach lovers should consider the Cornish coast, it's time to swap Swiss mountain views for the beauty of the Lake District, and the hotels and shops of Manchester can rival Milan."
Meanwhile, a survey of more than 11,000 AA members has revealed that 56% plan to forgo a foreign trip in 2009.
But the breakdown provider says it is concerned that drivers are also saving money by putting off essential maintenance - which could lead to expensive failures or even unsafe vehicles.
And it warns that un-roadworthy cars may not be fully covered by car insurance.
"The recession is hitting motorists hard," said AA president Edmund King. "We are already finding that motorists are cutting back on servicing, which often becomes a false economy when things go wrong.
"The only good news is the boost to UK tourism, with more drivers intending to holiday in the UK."
A section on the Visit Britain website, Budget Britain, contains ideas and resources for those planning an affordable UK holiday.
