Four out of five members of the public remain concerned about climate change, but support for some 'green taxes' has slipped, a survey has revealed.
The Department for Transport poll found that, for the third year running, 81% of adults were either 'very concerned' or 'fairly concerned' about climate change.
And two-thirds of those questioned agreed that "individuals should try to limit their car use for the sake of the environment".
However, there appeared to be diminishing support for punitive measures such as increased taxation for more polluting cars.
Yesterday the AA accused local councils of taking advantage of motorists' 'green guilt' over their CO2 emissions.
"Our research shows that motorists do care about the environment and do consider fuel efficiency when buying a car," said the AA's president, Edmund King. "However, there seems to be a 'green' bandwagon that more councils are jumping on to penalise drivers based on their cars' CO2 emissions."
The Campaign for Better Transport said that the Government ought to step in and provide real choices for the majority who want to cut their car use - by investing in better and more affordable public transport.
"The Government doesn't need to wait for the next survey," roads and climate change spokesperson Richard George told Admiral News.
"People want the Government to get on with tackling the problem."
