Thousands of car-buyers could be choosing diesel vehicles in the mistaken belief that they will save money, according to valuation specialists Parker's.
Diesel cars tend to be more fuel-efficient than their petrol-driven counterparts. In the past motorists have expected to recoup the higher purchase price of a diesel car through ongoing fuel savings.
However, Parker's says that the relatively high cost of diesel compared to petrol means that some motorists would now need a six-figure mileage to see the cost benefit.
The valuation magazine has published an online calculator to contrast the costs of diesel versus petrol models, taking into account market vehicle prices and the current cost of fuel.
Diesel is on average 11.3 pence a litre more expensive than petrol, according to the latest figures from price comparison site PetrolPrices.com.
The AA was warning back in March 2008, when forecourt prices for petrol and diesel were closer, that "buying a diesel is not an automatic switch to cut-price motoring".
