The Highways Agency has confirmed that it is to switch off lights on some stretches of motorway during the quietest parts of the night.
The agency has said that, from March, it will switch off lights between midnight and 5am on a "small number of carefully selected sites" with relatively little traffic. Junctions between motorway links will remain lit.
It estimates that the measures could save 40% on electricity and carbon emissions on the routes affected.
Some road-user groups have expressed concerns about the plan, pointing to a recent review of international research, by the Cochrane Library.
The review suggests that street-lighting does help to prevent road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities, and warns planners in the UK that the "potential adverse road safety impact of such a policy should be carefully considered" in light of its findings.
However, the agency said its own analysis of accident data found that "the possible night-time accident saving on motorways links was on average no more than 10%".
Spokeswoman Amelia Yeodal pointed out that the Cochrane study took data from a number of countries, while the Highway Agency's research focused solely on "specified sites around the UK".
The exact stretches are yet to be confirmed.
