The Ford Fiesta 1.25i Zetec has been named Car of the Year by What Car? magazine.
The What Car? judges praised the supermini's fuel-efficient design, "blend of delicate curves and sharp edges" and "nimble handling and strong grip".
Steve Fowler, editor of the magazine, said: "The Fiesta is the most complete small car we've ever tested ? it's practical enough to be used as a family car, fun enough to be used as a sports car and stylish enough to make the right impression.
"It's also affordable to buy, cheap to run and kind to the planet."
The Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI SE took the Small Family Car award for the third year running, with judges saying that the model was "classy, affordable, quiet, comfortable, spacious [and] solid".
And the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Zetec won both the Family Car and Estate Car awards.
The VW Golf GTI beat off the Honda Insight to be named the Most Exciting Car of 2009, in a category voted for by What Car? readers. The model is expected to go on sale in the autumn.
The full list of the What Car? Car of the Year 2009 award winners can be found on the What Car? website.
