The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the average new car sold last year were nearly 4% lower than the year before, according to a green driving website.
Figures published by website Clean Green Cars reveal that the UK average dropped from 164.8 grams of CO2 per kilometre (g/km) in 2007, to 158.7g/km in 2008 - a 3.71% improvement.
MINI topped Clean Green Cars' table with an average of 137.24g/km across all of its cars, narrowly below Fiat's fleet-wide average of 137.32g/km.
US manufacturer Jeep posted the biggest year-on-year improvement, dropping its CO2 emissions by 14.12% to 217g/km.
Just three manufacturers' averages went up in 2008: Chevrolet by 0.33%, Land Rover by 0.38%, and Dodge by 8.29%.
Clean Green Cars says that the fall-off in emissions was sharpest during the final quarter of the year, but added that this had "at least as much to do with the recession as it does an improvement in the CO2 output of the cars on sale; buyers choosing smaller and more efficient models in the face of the economic downturn ".
