The number of new cars sold in Europe fell by 7.8% in 2008, according to the latest figures.
And automotive data and intelligence provider Jato Dynamics warned that the fall - of 1,227,941 cars - happened largely in the second half of the year, with sales showing a steady decline since May.
Falling sales were most evident in December, a month in which the number of cars sold slumped 17.8% compared to the same month in 2007.
Recent figures for Great Britain showed that the domestic industry fared worse than the European average, with sales 11.3% down over those in 2007.
In total, 14,459,714 cars were sold across Europe in 2008, with Volkswagen's Golf maintaining its position at the top of the charts. While Volkswagen remained top for total sales, ahead of Opel/Vauxhall and Ford, all of the top ten manufacturers sold fewer cars than in 2007.
David Di Girolamo, business manager for Jato Consult, underlined the swiftness with which the market has contracted.
"Whilst on paper 7.8% may not appear to be a significant drop for the new car market during 2008, it's important to consider it remained fairly buoyant up until May, so the figure we see is largely down to the last six months of the year.
"Not only that, but the percentage represents in excess of a million new cars - the output of more than one manufacturing plant."
