More than a third of drivers (36%) admit to using a mobile phone while driving, a survey has revealed.
And a quarter of drivers said that they had done so within the last seven days.
The poll, conducted for What Car? magazine, found that an overwhelming 93% of motorists had seen another driver speaking on the phone in the past week.
Driving while using a hand-held mobile phone became illegal in December 2003, and motorists who do so risk a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence.
Drivers who have an accident while using a phone risk prosecution for dangerous driving and a possible jail sentence.
Last month, five years after the ban came into force, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) warned that drivers' behaviour had been slow to change, and that official figures "almost certainly" understated the number of crashes to which phone use contributed.
Commenting on the magazine's survey results, What Car? editor Steve Fowler said: "Research has shown that using a mobile phone at the wheel could be more dangerous than drink driving."
"The message is obviously not getting through - if you use a handheld mobile phone while driving, you may end up killing yourself or others."
