Quiet roads for long Christmas

24/12/2008

Roads are set to be quieter than normal in many areas of the UK, as the country experiences its longest Christmas break since 1992.The usually busy morning rush hours have been muted, as workers take advantage of a holiday period in which Christmas Day and Boxing Day run into the weekend. Many businesses hit by slow trading conditions have decided to take an extended break, according to the Federation of Small Businesses. And the economic downturn is prompting fewer people to fly abroad at Christmas, according to The Guardian, though VisitBritain is hoping for a boom in domestic tourism over the Christmas period.According to an AA poll of 7,388 people, the quietest day is set to be New Year's Day, with 87% claiming they will not be driving. The second quietest period is set to be Christmas Day, when 85% plan to avoid the roads. The situation may also have been eased by a two-thirds reduction in roadworks over the Christmas period, announced by the Highways Agency last week.
